Tero Lindberg

One of Finland’s leading trumpet players, Tero Lindberg can be heard on numerous recordings and tours by foremost Finnish artists as well as in many TV programmes (including Saturday Night Live Finland and Dances with Stars, the Finnish take on Strictly Come Dancing). In recent years he has toured Europe with bands and artists such as Sunrise Avenue, the Leningrad Cowboys and Jimi Tenor. Lindberg currently holds permanent positions with the Dallapé, Paula Koivuniemi, and Mikko Leppilampi ensembles and plays first chair with the Espoo Big Band and Turku Jazz Orchestra. Lindberg has worked as the artistic director of the Turku Jazz Orchestra since the beginning of 2018.

Lindberg released his debut solo album “Return of the Golden Trumpet” at the end of 2015. The album was met with great acclaim from wind instrumentalists both nationally and internationally, and encouraged Tero to continue pursuing a solo career in addition to his many ensemble roles. In 2017, he released a 3 track EP “Christmas with the Golden Trumpet”, and in 2018 he released his second solo album “The Golden Trumpet Strikes Again”. The newspaper Helsingin Sanomat gave this album five out five stars in their review of 27.2.2019.

Lindberg is also active on his YouTube channel “The Golden Trumpet”. The channel has well over 8000 subscribers and his music videos have been streamed over 2 million times. In particular, one of his own compositions and videos, “The Return of the Golden Trumpet,” has been streamed internationally over one million times. In recent years Tero has performed as a soloist for many of Finland’s big bands and orchestras with his “The Golden Trumpet” motif. Tero has also worked as a teacher at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory Helsinki and the Sibelius Academy, and is a frequent guest teacher at the Imatra Big Band Camp and the International Lieksa Brass Week festival.

Tero Lindberg is also known for his fine arrangements. In addition to the pieces on his solo albums, he has made arrangements for many TV programmes (including twelve seasons of Finland's Strictly Come Dancing) and concerts. Arrangements by him have found their way into the repertoire of many Finnish big bands, symphony orchestras and smaller line-ups. Among his recent projects have been collaborations with the Vantaa Pops Orchestra, the Oulu Sinfonietta, the Jyväskylä Sinfonia, and Finnish bands Sunrise Avenue, Vesa-Matti Loiri, Popeda and Haloo Helsinki!

Bio

Tero Lindberg (b. 1976) was 16 when he entered the Porvoo Region Music Institute to study the trumpet with Reijo Ruokonen. He was already playing keyboards in many different line-ups and when a certain soul band was looking around for a trumpet to supplement its sax player, he decided to try his hand at a new instrument. He soon realised that the trumpet was his instrument, and at the age of 20 was accepted for the dance musician programme at the Helsinki Pop/Jazz Conservatory as a pupil of Raimo Korhonen and Markku Renko. In 1997 he did his compulsory military service as a member of the Conscript Band in Lahti. Two years later, he got accepted for the degree programme in pop/jazz teaching at the Helsinki University of Applied Sciences and received his degree in 2005. His teachers at the time were Timo Paasonen, Mikko Pettinen and Tero Saarti. Tero spent 2001 as an exchange student at the Kunstuniversität Graz in Austria, where his teachers included Stefan Hofer, Stjepko Gut and Edvard Holthaner. He then practised and freelanced in Vienna from 2004 to 2007, after which he returned to Finland and has been kept extremely busy playing the trumpet and doing arrangements for numerous recordings and tours by leading Finnish artists and many TV programmes.

TEACHING

Tero has worked as a part-time teacher at the Sibelius Academy Jazz department and Junior Academy in 2014-2015 and 2016-2018, and at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory for the spring semester of 2019. At the Turku Conservatory and Institue of Music, Tero taught trumpet from 2011-2016 and wind band conducting from 2011-2017. In recent years Tero has coached orchestras at the Imatra Big Band Camp and Lieksa Brass Week, as well as been a regular assistant conductor with the Turku Jazz Orchestra since 2012. In addition to these regular jobs, he has given numerous private lessons, held clinics and coached many big bands in Finland.
